Watch: Herald Leader Report On Panhandling Van
In 2017, city officials in Lexington, Ky tasked New Life Day Center with operation of an "End Panhandling Now" van. Similar programs had found success in decreasing the number of active panhandlers on the streets in other large cities around the country.
A combination of public awareness, enhanced pedestrian safety laws, and the "End Panhandling Now" van have led to a recently reported ~87% decrease in active panhandlers on the city streets.
Not only has the program helped slow down panhandling, our city streets are cleaner! On an average day, our workers will walk between 5-8 miles of city roadways and pick up 70-100 bags of litter per day.
